What Is a Sleep Cycle?
Human sleep is not a single, flat state of rest. Throughout the night, your brain moves through repeating, structured rhythms known as ultradian cycles. On average, a single cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes (typically varying between 80 and 100 minutes between individuals).
During these 90 minutes, your brain shifts progressively through light sleep (Stages N1 and N2), down into deep slow-wave sleep (Stage N3), and finally rises into REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep before either momentarily stirring or beginning the next cycle.
